Saranagathi by Swamy Desikan Part 1

Saranagathi is most simplest and easiest way of getting our wishes fulfilled by Sriman Narayanan. 

After getting the glimpse on Gathyatrayam by Bhagavad Ramanujar let's see one more Grantham in Tamil written by Swamy Desikan, the Acharyan who meticulously strived to establish principles of Vaishnavism in lines of Bagavad Ramanujar. Later we can get to know the tatvams in practice and get into understanding Azhwar Pasurangal in detail.

Swamy Desikan written or composed several Sanskrit slokas and Tamil Verses. The group of Tamil Verses by him are called Desika Prabhandam. Of these the most important creation is called Adaikalapathu which has 10 pasurams that describes the Prapatti and the way to follow it.  

To be the best of my ability let me try to highlight the key meanings of the pasurams and for detailed explanations you can refer other available texts or upanyasams.  The lyrics of the Pasurams can be obtained from various sources like books or from the website www.prapatti.com i the language of your preference.  Now let us see the key verses.

1. Pasuram #1 - To whom should we surrender?

Pathi mudhalamavtril pathi enaku kudamal ethithisayum muzhandru odi ellaiyhu vizhum kaham Pol; muthi tharum nagazr eezhil mukiyamam kachi thanil athigiri arurlalarku adaikalam Nan pugundhene. 

Meaning: I couldn't get involved or practice in anything like "Bhakthi margam". Just like the story of kakasuran who ultimately fallen at the feet of Rama (refer Ramayan), even I surrender at the Lotus feet of Athigiri Arulalar (Varadhar) and take HIS protection. This is also Ananya Gathithvam. 

2. Pasuram #2 - Why only Perumal / Naryanan?

Sadi mudiyan sadhu mugan endru Ivar mudhlam tharam ellam, Adaya vinay payanagi azhindhu vidumpadi kandu; kadi malaral piriyatha kachi nagar athigiri, idamudaya Arulalar inai adigal adainthene!

Meaning:  The demi-gods like Bhrama, Shiva etc., are positions given to qualified atmas which goes off once they complete their punya and bad deeds (papa) during their positions. So these positions are only short term benefits. Hence seeing these thing I surrender to the feet Lord Athigiri Arulalar to do ever lasting service.  

3. Pasuram #3 - Should I to learn anything for Saranagathi? 

Thanthirangal Veru inri thamthi vazhi azhiyathu manthirangal thammalum matrumulla uraiyalum, antharam kandu adi Panivar elarkum arul puriyum , sinthurevar periyavanar seelamalathu ariyene!

Meaning: I don't know any mantras or thantras or  even understand and texts of Vedas. So I will  simply surrender to Varadhar who can understand the inner intentions of all who surrender to him and bless them. This could also be referred as "Aakinchanyam".

4. Pasuram #4 - Who all got Moksham by doing Saranagathi? Anecdotes of Proof

Kagam Irakathar mannar kadali kathira bandu, Nagam, aranyan mudala naga nagarar thamakum; pogam uyar veedu seithu ponnarul seithamai kandu, Naga malai nayaganar nal adi podhu adaintheyne!

Meaning :  Swamy Desikan highights here that any Jeevathma can do the saranagathi and any human or rakshasa / demon can do saranagathi and get the Moksham.  He highlights the stories of Kakasuran, Vibeeshnan, Droupathi, Gajendran, Kalingan (Naga),Kshtrabandu, Devas who got reief by surrendering to naryana (like Brhama or  Shiva who got rid of Bhramahathi Dosham).  By the word Nagarar he means even the people around or the entire kingdom.  Please refer to such stories outside this post as it may be too long to take it here.. 

5. Pasuram #5 : How do one Establish Saranagathi? How can one be true to Sriman Naryana?

Ugakum Avai Uganthu Ugavathu Anaithum Ozhinthu Uravu gunam miga thunivu pera unarnthu; viyan kavalan ena varithu; sagathil oru pugal illa thavam ariyen mathil kachi, nagarkaru nathanai nal adaikalamai adainthene!

Meaning :  This is very key pasuram that highlights the entire components of Saranagathi

Ugakum Avai Uganthu - Determine to do only what is liked by Perumal - Anukoolya Sankalpam

Ugavathu Anaithum Ozhinthu - Not to do things that not liked by Perumal -  Prathikoolya varjanam

miga thunivu pera unarnthu - Have boldness to trust HIM only - Maha Viswasam

Viyan Kalavan ena Varithu -  Trust HE is the absolute savior - Goptrutva varnam

Pugal Illa thavam Ariyen - Can't think of any means to attain moksham - Karpanyam

Realizing above I have surrendered to the Lord who Kanchi Varadhar

In the next posting Adiyen will continue the remaining Pasurams of this Adaikala pathu where we can see types of Saranagathi. Basics of Sri Vaishnavam - #2 - Saranagathi

Before we get into further details on Sri Vaishnavam the first and foremost important topic we should understand is about Saranagathi.  Once we do this, then Emperuman will bless us to understand the rest more in detail.  Saranagathi : 1. Sar anagathi or Prapatti basically means surrendering to Sriman Narayana.  2. " Gathi" means "state".   "Saran" means Surrender.
