Emperunan Pirati Azhwar Acharyan Thiruvadigale Saranam

This posting a continuation to the earlier posting on Saranagathi by our Acharyan Bhagavad Sri Ramanujar.

1. After composing Saranagathi Gadhyam to Perumal & Pirati, Udayavar gets blessed by Emperuman and he requests Emperuman to continue his kainkaryam to teach all about Saranagathi without any hindrances and thus so Emperuman also blessed him. So he decided to tell all about meaning of   Dhwaya Mantrams and how to follow the same. Hence he composes Sri Ranga Gadhyam* where he exclusively highlights Sri Ranganathan & Sri Ranganayaki.

1. In this Sri Ranga Gadhyam there are 7 Choornigais (group of stanzas). In the first Choornigai he highlights what a Chetanan (Jeevathama who decides to surrender) should aspire to attain.

2. In the next Choornigai he expresses his lack of qualification even to do saranagathi (considering past sins) and as well his inability to surrender. He pleads to Perumal to help him do the surrender and obtain his wishes. This quality of someone who feels his inability is called Akinchanyam (please refer to my earlier posting).

3. In 3,4,5 he further pleads for HIS blessings for the above and  establishes his Maha Viswasam (Absolute faith). In 6 & 7th he highlights Emperumans Kalyana Gunangal (vathsalyam, karunyam, sowseelyam etc..) and surrenders the atma at his feet. He highlights that our atma is also belongs Perumal only and returns it back to him.

In the third Grantham namely, Sri Vaikuntha Gadhyam Udayavar having got the blessings of Emperuman desires for nithya kainkaryam (ever lasting service) to be continued at Paramapadam.  He describes about the kainkaryam that a Prapanan (Jeevathama who surrendered) should wish for. He explains the greatness and glory of Paramapadam and benefits of doing Sarangathi,  There are 6 Choornigain in this grantham,

1. In the very first choornigai he again highlights the Swaroopa roopa gunas (characters) of Emperuman and how Emperuman is different from all other atmas.  He highlights why and how we should look for Nithya Kainkaryam at the Nithya Viboodhi.

2. In the second Choornigai he highlights the importance of sustaining the saranagathi,  Though one has to do saranagathi only once one should not let one's mind wander in other things and stay focused to pray and get nithya kainkaryam at Paramapadam also,

3. In the third Choornigai he explains the glory of Paramapadam which a prapanan will attain through the archararthi margam (the path through which we attain the salvation).

4. In the next three choornigais he highlights the benefit that an Atma that has surrendered to Emperuman and how one can enjoy and stay happily under the feet of Emperuman.

Conclusion :  The key learning that we should take from the Gadhyathreyam is that we should realize that one should understand that instead of just being satisfied with our current worldly pleasures we should desire for everlasting happiness.  Just don't restrict yourself to take care of your physical body & mind alone.  Once we realize our atma is always permanent we will find a way to everlasting binding with Emperuman.  The Almighty who can provide this is Sriman Narayana and easiest to way to attain this state is by Saranagathi.  Understand the glory of Emperuman and Paramapadam and desire to attain permanent happiness.

  1. I really like your birds eye view, very well summarised. Often times we are lost in some deep dive not knowing where we are. Even after a deep dive what remains in mind is the gist. So it's wonderful to have this big picture and well rounded view. I am going to refresh by visiting your blog now and then. Kudos to you! ЁЯЩП ЁЯЩП
