Saranagathi by Bagavad Ramanujar

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namha:

Srimathe Nigamananda Maha Desikaya Namaha:

1. Our Acharyans & Azhwars have highlighted the SharaNagathi in their Granthams (Slokas or Prabhandams).  While it may take a long time to understand,  we can try to  see them as we progress. In this posting let us see how our Jagadhachariyan Ramanujar did the SharaNagathi.

2. Bhagavad Ramanujar preached us the secrets of SharaNagathi through Vishnu Puranam, Maha Bharatam, Bhagavad Gita etc..

3  On one sacred day (Panguni Uthram) when Sri Ranga Nachiyar & Sri Ranganathar were together in a decorated the mandap (serthi) for sake and on behalf of  Bhakthas like us , Bhagavad Ramanujar prayed before them and did Prapatti or SharaNagathi.  Later, during this occassion whatever the dialogue he had with them he composed three Granthams namely Saranagathi Gadhyam, Sri Ranga Gathyam and Sri Vaikuntha Gadhyam. All three are together called "Gadhyatrayam".

Highlights of Gadhyatrayam

While it will take a great effort for us to learn Gadhyatrayam (let's take this at a later stage.)  we can look into  some highlights of the Saranagathi Gadyam and the message by our Acharyan to us

4. Udayavar first surrenders to Periya Pirati and then through her to Periya Perumal. By this he tells the world that going through Thayar (Pirati) is the best way to get your desire fulfilled and blessed by Perumal.

5. Based on his prayers Thayar gets pleased and  blesses Sri Ramanujar for  his wishes come true, ie get his wishes presented to Sriman Narayana and get blessed

6. In this Gadhyathrayam, Bhagavad Ramanjuar highlights the basic qualities that we need to acquire and develop to do Saranagathi. They are,

            a. Para Bhakthi - Thorough Devotion;

b. Para Gnanam - Deep Knowledge or wisdom to understand Perumal;

c. Parama Bhakthi - Absolute devotion - meaning at all times we should only devote our Bhakthi to Sriman Narayana

7.  He tells Emperuman that he will completely surrender to HIM only  (Ananya Gadhyathvam) and expresses his inability (akinchanyam),that is absence of required qualifications or good qualities and request HIM only to help him surrender.

8. Bhagavad Ramanujar beautifully describes the great qualities of Emperuman (Kalyana Gunangal as we call in Tamil) and the beauty of his entire Thirumeni (struture) and explains every ornament that Emperuman is wearing from HIS Thirumudi to Thiruvadi.  One can enjoy the complete verses with Ramanuja’s beautiful fascinating Sanskrit words.

The qualities he highlights about Perumal are HIS Soundaryam (beauty), Karunyam (kindness), Simplicity, Great affection to those who surrender him.

9. Udayavar also requests Emperuman to forgive all our sins that we have done in past including the Bhagavath Apachara (disrespect to GOD), Bhagavatha Apachara (disrespect any Bhagavatha) and any evil thoughts in our mind that we had in the past.

10. At the end he concludes how Emperuman accepts his SharaNagathi and bless him.

11. On similar lines Sri Ranga Gadhyam and Vaikuntha Gadhyam are composed. The highlights of the same will follow in subsequent posting.

This post is only to give a orientation to the reader. It requires more indepth explanation for each of the stanzas or choornigai to understand it completely. Those who are interested can refer any other materials available to understand in detail.
