Acharya Podhu Thaniyan

Perumal Pirati Thiruvadigale Saranam || Srimathe Ramnujaya Namha || In the previous blog we saw the basics of Guruparampari.  So it's a practice we pray our respects to the great Acharyans who helped create the wonderful Sampradhyam which helps us attain our end goal of reaching Sriman Narayana .  The worship of Acharyans is done through a poetry or sloka which is called Thaniyan. There a common thaniyan which is used by all sects before any chanting started.  vEdantha dEsikan thaniyan (brahmathanthra swathanthra jIyar aruLich seydhadhu) rAmAnuja dayApAtram GYAna vairAgya bhUshaNam | srimat vEngkatanAthAryam vandE vEdAnta dEsikam || Manavala Mamunigal thniyan (Namperumal aruLIch seydhadhu) Sri Shailesa dayApAtram theBakYathi kunArnAvaM| Ytheendra Pravanam VanDe RamyajA maTharam guru paramparai thaniyan (kUraththAzhvAn aruLich seydhadhu) lakshmI nAtha samArambhAm nAthayAmuna madhyamAm | asmadAchArya paryantAm vandE guru paramparAm || emperumAnAr thaniyan (kUraththAzhvAn ar...

Sri Vaishnava Basics - Guru Paramparai

Perumal Pirati Thiruvadigale Saranam || Srimathe Ramnujaya Namha || In the previous postings we learnt little about Ramanujar and we can learn about his achievements and management abilities as we go forward. Let me park this topic for now and switch to understanding the basics of another topic called Guru Paramparai.  1. The word "Paramparai" refers to the ancestry.   In our regular practice we normally address the family tree as the ancestry, ie the hierarchy of parents-child relationship.  In Guru Paraparai we go by the hierarchy of teachers (Acharyans) from whom we get the Samasrayanam where we get to know the secret of getting salvation.. The one who enlighten us with that secret mantra is our Acharyan or Guru. 2. Acharya or Guru Paramparai refers to the hierarchy of Acharyans from whom one gets the knowledge.  Other term namely "Janacharyan", means the teachers who impart us any knowledge .  There can be many jnacharyans however as far as Guru Parampa...

Ramanujar a Social Reformer

Perumal & Pirati Thiruvadigale Saranam || Srimathe Ramnujaya Namha|| In continuation to my earlier post on Bagavad Ramanujar would like to high light few more facts on how he differed from other Acharyans based on his personal qualities and achievements. After getting the Samasrayanam or Pancha Samaskaram from Periya Nambi, Periya Nambi asked him to learn the secrets of attaining moksham from another guru by name Thirukoshtiyur Nambi or Goshti Purnar. He is one of the sishyas of Alawandar (Yamunacharya) who taught him the inner meanings of Ashtaksharam,   Dwaya matram, Churma Slokam.  These three mantras are also called "Rahasya Threyam".  A small note of Thirukoshtiyur Nambi: * Thirukoshtiyur Nambi was born in Thirukoshtiyur in Tamil Nadu, in the year of 987,  a staunch Sri Vaishnava * Thirukoshtiyur Nambi is one of the sishyas of Alawandar (Yamunacharya) who taught him the inner meanings of Ashtaksharam,   Dwaya matram, Churma Slokam.  These...

Sri Vaishnava Philosophy - Part B

Perumal Pirati Thiruvadigale Saranam|| Azhwar Emperumanar Jeer Swamy Desikan Thiruvadigale Saranam|| In my earlier posting we saw some basic concepts of Visishtathvaidham and some key characteristics of Jeevathma & Paramathma. Bagawad Ramanujar established this fact which is inscribed in Vedam by writing the correct interpretations through Sri Bhashyam. However to understand Sri Bhashyam one may need to spend more time and also should identify a scholar to learn it. Hence Bagavad Ramanujar or Bhasyakarar came up with some simple practices that one can follow in life to attain the moksham and avoid rebirth.  Therefore we can start our journey of understanding this great concepts by following the practices defined by Bagavad Ramanujar.   First let's try to get some interesting details in Bagavad Ramanujar's life which will affirm our faith to follow the philosophy defined by him. Bagavad Ramanujar who is also fondly called as Bhashyakar, Udayavar etc., was born in the y...

Sri Vaishnava Philosophy - Part A

Perumal Pirati Thiruvadigale Saranam|| Azhwar Emperumanar Jeer Swamy Desikan Thiruvadigale Saranam|| Before we learn about Azhwars and their creations let's try to understand the various philosophies and terminologies in Sri Vaishnavam. It's a little complex to understand concepts and one should go more in depth to have clear understanding. Adiyen will try my level best to simply and present it here. However we can into the details during our future journey of this learning.  What is Visishtadvaidam? Let's try to understand Visishtadvaidam which was defined and established by Bhagavad Ramanujar and is the basis for Sri Vaishnavam.  1. Lets start with our understanding of soul & body. Everyone can feel that there is something beyond our physical body which gives us life. We won't be able see this but can be felt. That innermost invisible atomic structure is called "soul" or "atma". The body we call it as sareeram and every "atma" takes a...

Saranagathi by Swamy Desikan part 3

 Om Namo Narayana|| Perumal & Thayar Thiruvadigale Saranam|| Srimathe Ramanujaya Namha|| Srimathe Nigamananda Maha Desikaya Namaha|| In continuation to my earlier posting on Adaikalapathu let me continue with the meanings of remaining pasurams. Pasuram #9  Suruthi nanivariym thinuvudayar thoomozhigal  Parithimadhi Asiriyar Pasuram sernuthu aruk kanagal  Karuthi oru thelivalaar kalakamaru Athigiri  Parithimadhi payanamudai paraman adi paninthene! Meaning  : What are the duties to be after Prapatti? It's just not sufficient to say "I have done Saranagathi and hence can do whatever I want". It's important that a prapanan should follow atleast few disciplines activities to remain his thoughts focused on his goal, ie attaining the Moksham. 1. A saranagathan should try understand  the meanings of Vedam (Suruthi), Ninavu (Smrithi), Azhwar's Pasurangal, Acharyan's Sri sukthi etc..  2. One should follow an Acharyan and his advise. By this one will get ...
